Soft Succulent: The Paddle Plant

Perfect for a desk pal or corner-table caretaker, a succulent known as the paddle, or kalanchoe, plant has long been an indoor favorite with its thick, rounded “paddle” leaves and ability to flourish in lightly sunny to shady areas with just a little watering every now and then. Succulents are great when being grown and cared for indoors because of the light maintenance work needed to keep them alive. Paddle plants only grow up to 6 inches across, and can even see some color change in its leaves, tinging to a soft red when exposed to direct sunlight. Plus, this soft succulent makes for an easy housewarming or birthday gift for the beginner plant-lovers in your life!

Fast-Growing Shoots That Produce: The Spider Plant

We think if Spider-man had a favorite plant, this would be the one. A Chlorophytum comosum (try saying that three times fast), or “Spider Plant” looks great in any area of the home – even hanging from above! They were a favorite in the Victorian era-household for the “ribbons” of lengthy, striped leaves and jungle-like appearance. Still today, it’s popular for its ease of growth and reproduction. Seriously, they can be removed and replaced onto moist soil to quickly take root and start a new life. There are a few varieties of spider plants to choose from, which will allow you to make your sun room, kitchen, or even living room the plant paradise you’ve always wanted within minimal watering and upkeep.

Adding a Little Spice To Your Life: Herbs

If you’re wanting to accomplish something more than just keeping a few stems and leaves alive, then you may be ready to wander into a true gardening skill! Without spending the time and effort outside that it takes to maintain the normal fruits and veggies, investing in an herb or two to keep in your window is an easy way to strengthen your green thumb. Herbs such as rosemary, oregano, thyme, chives, bay laurel and mint are easiest to grow from young plants that you buy at a garden center. Growing herbs is one of the best ways to enjoy the flavors and scents of your own personal, little garden during the blistering summer months & even into the dead of winter.
