Meet Rebecca Gould Baeurle
Rebecca Gould Baeurle has spent a lifetime helping others chase their missions—now she’s chasing one of her own. After a successful career in the nonprofit world spanning education, healthcare, disability inclusion, and community-building, she’s traded grant proposals for plot twists with The Secrets Trilogy.
Originally from a small town in North Jersey, Rebecca earned a degree in Communications and English from the University of Delaware and never stopped writing. Her voice was forged out of necessity to survive in a family of ferocious talkers, while her storytelling skills were honed through decades of quick wit, lively conversations, and hilarious banter.
Six Weeks of Love & Larceny is her debut novel and the first installment in The Secrets Trilogy. Rebecca lives just outside Philadelphia—close enough to cheer loudly for the Eagles—and is known to escape to the Delaware beaches with a great book and an even better cocktail. She has been married to her college sweetheart, Mike, for 36 years, has two grown children who still keep her on her toes, and yes… she really does have a sister she adores.
Your Secrets Trilogy mixes romance, suspense, and a little chaos—what do you think your characters would say about you if they got a chance to write you back?
I think they’d scold me for the chaos I wrote into their lives (and rightfully so, that was pretty bitchy) but thank me for all the rest of it.
What’s your personal relationship with “messy women”—do you write them, admire them, relate to them, or all three?
I think we’re all a little messy, that’s what makes us interesting and unique. I write them because they feel real and remind me of the people in my life – imperfectly perfect.
If Six Weeks of Love & Larceny had a theme song that followed your characters around like a movie soundtrack, what would it be?
‘Lean On Me’ by Bill Withers. It pretty much sums up the sisters’ relationship – plus it’s a great tune.
You blend humor with tension so naturally—do you think comedy is actually a disguise for truth in storytelling?
The expression ‘If you can’t laugh, you’ll cry,’ exists for a reason. While all emotions deserve attention, you can find humor in most situations if you look hard enough and who wouldn’t rather laugh than cry?
What’s the most unexpected thing a reader has told you about how your story made them feel?
That sisterhood deserves to be celebrated as much as romance.
If Nikki and Lauren walked into your real life for one day, what’s the first rule you would give them?
I wouldn’t give them rules – they’ve worked hard enough to live by their own. I’d offer them a drink, some good appetizers, a warm hug and the promise to be there for them no matter what.
Your stories are very character-driven—do you start with a plot, a personality, or a problem that refuses to leave you alone?
I start with a character and let them tell me the story as I develop their personality. What would this person get themselves into? How would they react to this situation or that? The story just seems to grow out of answering those types of questions and sometimes it changes along the way as a result. For instance, Lauren was the original main character in Six Weeks of Love & Larceny but the more I wrote Nikki her story just sort of took over so I re-ordered the chapters and made her the star.
What’s a moment in your writing process that feels almost like “magic” rather than work?
When what happens next comes to me so clearly that I have to write it down immediately. I can almost see it like a movie in my head.
Sisterhood is central to your series—how much of your own understanding of friendship and loyalty shows up in your characters?
All of it. I am blessed with fiercely loyal friends who show up without being asked, cheer the loudest for the good stuff and stand the strongest when things inevitably go sideways. My friends are the family I choose, and I chose wisely because I have a pretty stellar family and my actual sister is the original relationship at the root of it all.
When readers finish your book and close it, what emotion do you secretly hope lingers the longest—joy, curiosity, chaos, or something else?
Curiosity. I hope the reader will want more – have a need to know what happens next and not want to let the characters go. More weeks are coming…
