Fashion Turned Essential: Why a NYC Designer is Letting People Pay What They Can Afford For Protection From Covid-19

Meet Mallorie Dunn

Mallorie Dunn is the owner and designer of SmartGlamour – an ethical, customizable clothing line for people of all shapes and sizes. SmartGlamour is a NYC based business that launched in 2014.

Outside of running a fashion brand, Mallorie is an adjunct professor at Parsons where she teaches a fashion business course. With 20 years of sewing under her belt and degrees from FIT and Pratt Institute, it is safe to say that Mallorie knows her way around a sewing machine.

Custom Masks with Special Fabrics

Mallorie spent time researching non-medical grade masks and found that cotton wovens are actually not the best fabric option – as particles can more easily come through the weave. “I am using a fabric called Ponte – which is a double knit, medium weight fabric – it is very soft, still breathable but without the open weave of cotton”, stated Mallorie.

“It’s soft handfeel also allows it to form to folks’ faces in a more comfortable manner. They then have elastic at either end to hook on the wearers’ ears. I am using a pattern which came sized Sm, Med, L – and I have further graded it to both an XS and an XL – and am happy to further customize masks to people’s fit or design needs. On all of our posts, you will find a size chart and a graphic for how to measure your face before ordering” said Mallorie.

How Can People Order Masks?

Since the masks are pay what you can/want masks are not listed as a standard product on SmartGlamour’s website. To order, people are encouraged to visit SmartGlamour on Facebook – and view the pinned post. People can also find SmartGlamour on Instagram at @smart_glamour. There customers can find a story highlight titled “Masks”. After reading the information provided, customers can DM SmartGlamour, comment on either platform, or email them at smartglamour@gmail.com.

“Masks are pay what you can, meaning, if you can only pay $1 or $3 or $5 a mask, that’s fine. But if you can afford to pay $10 or $15 or $20 – you are offsetting the folks who can not afford to pay more”, stated Mallorie.

A Heart Made of Gold

The kindness of Mallorie doesn’t stop with pay what you can/want face masks. Ms. Dunn is offering free masks to individuals in need (just reach out, there is no qualification process), and donating sets of masks to essential workers and healthcare workers in the NYC area as well as people experiencing homelessness.

Please note: Customers can also choose to donate toward these efforts when purchasing their masks.
