As a curvy, boss, babe, I often ask myself, ” What does it take to become legendary?” Seriously, what does it take? Although no one may have all the answers, I was fortunate enough to chat with someone who has a few, co-founder of Everything Legendary, Danita Claytor.
Personally, I absolutely love being an entrepreneur. Regardless of the hard work, late nights and mountains of stress, there is something electric about building a brand of your own. Ironically enough, I can’t get my fill of learning about the journey of other business owners, especially business owners who have successfully pitched inside the one and only “Shark Tank”.
What Is Everything Legendary?
Everything Legendary, founded by Duane “Myko” Cheers, Danita Claytor, and Chef Jumoke Jackson, is leading the flavor revolution with a line of healthy, plant-based ground meat and burger patties. Inspired by moms, created by a chef, and taste-tested by the community, Everything Legendary is a Black-owned company that goes above and beyond the impossible to deliver food with legendary flavor and superior quality at retailers nationwide, in restaurants and online.
Q & A With A Boss, Danita Claytor
Q: In a recent interview Duane (co-founder) stated, “I heard ‘no’ 1,000,001 times over the years, but this one ‘yes’ moment changes everything.” Can you elaborate on the types of no’s you would receive and how you would evaluate and move forward?
Types of no’s the legendary team would come across include: “This is a premature project” , “you don’t have enough product” and ” you won’t be able to scale”. “Some of those nos’s were discouraging”, stated Danita. “But thank go we have a great team. we would reconvene as a team. No matter how many times we were told no, that does not work for us. We would reconvene and work harder” said Claytor.
Q: Preparing to pitch on national television must be quite the task. Can you give insight to how you prepared for your “time in the tank”
“What I can say, it takes hard work and sacrifice. We decided as a team – what we are going to say. We had several study sessions. We drilled each other and went in the ‘tank’ (sic) well prepared”, said Danita.
Q: As a business owner, knowing your value is key. Did you and your partner discuss deal breakers prior to taking a dip into the Shark Tank?
“We decided as a team that if we do get an offer this is how much we will go”, stated Danita. “We don’t want someone to take over our company. We know our worth. One thing we decided as a team, we stated we are not going beyond 25 percent”, stated Danita.
