Her leadership reflects a modern approach to entrepreneurship—one that honors community, collaboration, and purpose as much as performance.
What inspired you to start your business, and what problem did you feel called to solve?
I have worked in public relations and strategic communications for more than two decades, so launching my own agency was a natural progression. I started KTA Media Group, a full-service integrated communications firm, to help organizations clearly tell their stories and connect with the audiences that matter most. At KTA Media Group, we support every aspect of our clients’ communications strategy, including public relations, media training, crisis communications, community engagement, book and product launches, digital marketing, influencer relations, strategic partnerships, and more.
I noticed that many organizations didn’t have an in-house communications department or their internal team was too small to manage the workload. We often serve as the “external, internal communications department” for many of our clients.
Can you take us back to the moment you knew entrepreneurship was the path for you?
I knew entrepreneurship was the right path for me when I started having to turn down a high volume of opportunities because I was still working a full-time job. I was raised to “go to college and get a good job,” so owning my own company wasn’t initially the goal. However, when God continues to open doors for you, you have to have the wisdom and courage to walk through them. This year we are celebrating 10 years of KTA Media Group, and God continues to open the doors we need at the right time.
How did you identify your niche, and what made you confident it was worth building around?
I have been a communicator all my life. I often tell people my career started in the church when I was about 4 years old when giving my Christmas and Easter speeches. I grew up in a family and church community that was very supportive and encouraging.
I could memorize and recite my speeches with confidence, and the congregation would all applaud. Those early moments built my confidence and opened the door to more opportunities.
As I got older, I represented my church in various programs and even taught Sunday school while I was still in high school. I went on to win awards in speech and debate and excelled academically as a gifted and talented student. While I had strengths in many areas, communications was clearly the path that aligned with both my gifts and my passion.
What were some of the biggest obstacles you faced in the early stages, and how did you navigate them as a woman founder?
One of the biggest obstacles we faced in the early stages was managing rapid growth. Demand for our work grew quickly, which was a blessing, but it also required tighter infrastructure and a stellar team.
I navigated this challenge by building a strong, experienced, results-driven team. My team truly is the MVP of KTA Media Group.
How did you fund your business in the beginning, and what lessons did you learn about money, access, or bootstrapping along the way?
My business has been both self-funded and growth-funded. We are grateful for every single client who has trusted us with their brand, from the small businesses we represent to the Fortune 500 companies we work with.
Access to capital and resources continues to be a real challenge many businesses face, especially small businesses. Funding can be the difference between a company barely surviving and truly thriving. This reality has reinforced for me the importance of building strong client relationships, delivering excellent work, and growing strategically.
Were there moments when you doubted yourself, and what helped you push through those periods?
No, I never doubted myself. I have the experience, relationships, and business savvy to be successful in many endeavors.
There were times when things were tough, but my faith has always grounded me. God has consistently opened the right doors for me and my team and brought the right clients to us. We have been beyond blessed that the majority of our clients come through referrals, which is something we never take for granted. When people trust you enough to recommend you, that is one of the highest honors in business. We are forever grateful.
How has your identity as a woman influenced the way you lead, build, and make decisions?
I was blessed to be raised by strong women. My mother, grandmothers, aunts, cousins, and friends all played a role in shaping who I am today. I saw these amazing women persevere through so many things and still build beautiful lives for themselves and their families.
Their strength, resilience, and love have deeply influenced me and how I lead. I am acutely aware of the sacrifices made for me, so I honor that in the way I live. I am very results-driven, but I also lead with love and with a commitment to helping my team grow and operate in their gifts. Each person on our team is uniquely gifted and valuable to the work we do.
Who or what inspired you during the hardest moments of your journey?
God, faith, my family, my friends, the people who love me, and my team have inspired me during the hardest moments in my journey. I am beyond blessed.
What has been the most unexpected lesson entrepreneurship has taught you so far?
One of the most unexpected lessons entrepreneurship has taught me is to take risks. Being open to risk (thoughtful, calculated risks of course) has led to reward for me and my team.
One example has been expanding our team and service offerings to better meet the evolving needs of our clients. At KTA Media Group, our motto is to “super serve,” and that mindset continues to guide how we grow and innovate.
What advice would you give to women who feel called to start a business but are waiting for the “right” time?
I would say start while you still have the security of your day job and steady income. You can begin by freelancing or working with a small number of clients during your time off as you build your business.
I would also encourage women to set realistic goals, build a strong support system, and surround themselves with people who believe in their vision. Start with your network. Often your first customers and initial referrals will come from your immediate circle. One of my good friends was the first person to contract me to do freelance work. Then, one of my sorority sisters hired me for my first full-time role in publics relations. We still work together today, and her school is my longest-standing client.
Entrepreneurship requires courage, discipline, and faith, but it can also be one of the most rewarding journeys you will ever take!
