Hair extensions give women the option to change their look in an instant. Want longer hair? Want more volume? Want to go from a daytime to a evening look in a matter of minutes? Hair extensions are a fantastic option giving you simplicity or glamour. With proper care, you can extend the life of your extensions to protect your investment for months.
“Properly caring for clip-in hair extensions can keep them looking great for 6-12 months based on how often you use them,” says Jennifer Hutchens, Brand and Product Development Director with Barely Xtensions.
Caring for clip-in hair extensions is almost as easy as wearing them. Here are five tips to keep in mind to extend the life of your beautiful extensions.
Products are EVERYTHING
Hair extensions do not receive nourishing, natural oils from the scalp like our own hair does so in order to keep your extension set in optimal condition using high quality hair products is a must. Harsh ingredients will dry the hair out and deplete it of moisture causing damage while ultra-gentle, sulfate-free, alcohol-free products will nourish the hair keeping it in optimal condition.
Shampooing isn’t always necessary
Hair extensions don’t need to be washed every time you wear them. Wait until you can visibly see or feel that they need it, approximately every 5-10 wears. Before shampooing, brush through the hair to free it of tangles, use cool water, add your shampoo and very gently work through the extensions moving from top to bottom, avoiding aggressive scrubbing. Apply conditioner after you shampoo to help them stay hydrated, soft and shiny.
Refreshing will give life
In between washes it is important to still refresh and nourish the hair. Mist a dry conditioner and/or hair perfume for freshness and apply a nourishing serum to hydrate and add increased shine and manageability. When not in use, store in a clean, dry place.
Tangles are your worst enemy
Before and after wearing hair extensions and prior to shampooing take the time to gently brush through the hair using an ultra-gentle soft bristle brush that can effectively detangle while avoiding breakage. It is easiest to hold the hair at the top and start from the bottom, gently brushing through the hair. This will avoid creating any significant knots and effectively detangle the hair.
Beat the heat
You can style hair extensions using heat, but it is very important to use a low heat setting along with a heat protective spray prior to using any styling tools to prevent damage. This will not only help to defend your extensions against premature dryness and breakage, but it will also keep them looking shiny and feeling silky smooth.
