8 Ways to Fight the Winter Blues

Many can relate to winter being a difficult time. Although the days are short; the cold season seems long. Here are a few ways to help with seasonal depression and fight the winter blues:

Find A Hobby

Keep in touch with or discover your hobbies that could make your time indoors pass even faster. Staying indoors doesn’t have to be boring. Looking through or following others with similar hobbies may inspire you to create your own. From puzzles, painting, writing, or building, the options are limitless.

Spend Time With Others

Continuing the time and effort into your relationships with friends and families can get you out of your headspace, as well as deepen your connections with them.

Play With Your Food

Diversify your diet and have fun with it through seasonal fruits and vegetables. Not to mention, other seasonal meals, such as soups, casseroles, or being creative with leftovers from the holidays. Oranges and other citrus fruits can help against the flu season, and leafy greens (spinach and kale) help the immune system. While both are great in salads, oranges can be quick snacks. And leafy greens go great in stir fries and soups.

Movement

Bring on those endorphins! Moving your body can be fun either indoors or outdoors! Walking, jogging, stretching or any activity that can elevate your heart rate. Find a way to move your body, one that you enjoy. Thanks to technology, there are plenty of online instructors available on social media.

Planning

Creating and visualizing your dreams can give you something to look forward to during winter and when it’s over. Small or big, work, personal, or family related, there are all sorts of goals that you can have.

Fresh Air

Maximize your sunlight time by waking up earlier if you can or going out for a bit to enjoy the outdoors. Simply taking a walk in your neighborhood or nearby park can be a mood booster, especially if you spot a cute dog or cat on the way.

Sunlight Therapy

If outdoor time is limited or not possible, artificial light boxes can help. They are also available as alarm clocks, perfect for those who still have to get up early for work during the winter.

Professional Therapy

If you continue to not feel mentally or physically well during the cold season, talking to a professional is also an option. Mental health is important.
